Stag's Leap Wine Cellars 2023, Karia Chardonnay, Napa Valley
14.5% ABV
The name Karia (KAR-ee-ah) is derived from the Greek word meaning graceful. It shows how grapes from select cool-climate vineyards in southern Napa Valley (the Atlas Peak District (43%), Carneros (32%), Coombsville (14%) and Oak Knoll (11%)) can be vinified and blended into a seamless integration of fresh-fruit aromas and flavors, crisp acidity and subtle oak spice. The grapes for this wine were picked early in the morning to keep them cool and then they were whole cluster pressed to preserve freshness. Oak and malolactic fermentation were used in moderation to accent, rather than overwhelm, the fruit.
Stag’s Leap is one of the undisputed icons of the Napa Valley. The winery was founded in 1970, and their 1973 Cabernet won the famous Judgement of Paris tasting, beating first- and second-growth bordeaux. Since then they have become one of the most lauded and sought-after wine producers anywhere in the world. The winery is located in the Stags Leap District, a small sub-division in the south-eastern Napa Valley known for producing particularly elegant, ageworthy wine. Over the last five decades, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars have witnessed the dizzying proliferation of Napa Valley vineyards, yet amidst all their new neighbours have retained their own, compelling voice.
