Pommery Brut Royal Champagne NV 6 Champagne Case

£299.70
ABV 12.5%

The house of Pommery started as a modest producer of red wine. On the death of the founder, his widow assumed the direction of the business, from this point towards the production of Champagne, and in particular targeting the English market at a time when it was becoming increasingly popular, especially in London.

Louise Pommery not only presided over the very successful elaboration of Champagne, notably the first dry Champagne in 1874 with sugar content of 6g/l, she also conducted period of expansion of the estate, acquiring Grand Crus sites and producing grapes of exceptionally high quality.

In the last decade of the twentieth century, Pommery went through a period of inertia, which culminated in its takeover by the Moët Hennessy group. The latter's drive for maximum production led to impoverishment of the Champagne as louise Pommery's maxim of "qualité d'abord" was abandoned. However despite the ensuing manoeuvres, the Master of cellar masters Thierry Vasco, has managed to restore the reputation of quality of Pommery.

This Pommery Brut Royal, with its component elements of 35% Chardonnay, 35% Pinot Noir, and 30% Pinot Meunier from 40 select villages including Côte des Blancs and Montagne de Reims, is a dry Champagne with sharp noted but mellow after taste, hints of elderflower and pear, and a very fine Mousse that is buoyant on the tongue.
