TASTING NOTES
By all accounts, 2024 Batailley will be the first to break from the cover and enter the EP arena this year. As such, I will report on it directly on my website (here), in isolation, as the standard bearer for the region, blowing its trumpet before the others have even got out of bed. It’s a shame this wine is not quite as polished as I had hoped for, given it is the hare for the hounds to follow, but the fruit is soaked with red plums, blackberries and mulberries, and while the tannins are characteristically sturdy, and the chassis is a little coarse, it will come around before too long. The main point of interest is that this vintage celebrates the 100th anniversary of the forefathers Francis and Marie Borie arriving at the Batailley, and an eye-catching label design makes this wine stand out! Even so, this glorious centenary is secondary to the stunning news that they have a limited run of very fat bottles (pictured) and this celebratory size (it is a Marie-Jeanne or 2.25 litres), along with the postbox red label and decent contents make this a fun first purchase!
17+/20 Matthew Jukes

Fragrant, floral, precise, with graphite and crayon character that is immediately apparant on the nose. Very much captures the appellation and estate signature, with real classicism and balance, depth through the mid palate and slim, savoury blue and black fruits. Well constructed, and no question that this can age - easy to project forward to think that in a decade this will be in full Batailley swing. 57% new oak for ageing, Casteja family estate. 2030-2044
