Ample, creamy and voluptuous, the 2015 dazzles from the very first taste. Dark raspberry jam, rose petal mint and wild flowers are some of the many notes that are laced throughout. Intense and explosive, but also remarkable vibrant, the 2015 is one of the finest Tignanellos in recent memory. The 2015 also represents a bit of a shift in winemaking philosophy that favors picking fruit a bit earlier than in the past and also blending earlier than was the case in the previous period spanning 2004-2014, when the components were aged separately and then blended just before bottling. Lastly, at 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 has a bit more Sangiovese than is the norm, which contributes to the wine's freshness and energy.

Score: 98

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, February 2019

Fantastic aromas of dark berries, sandalwood and Spanish cedar that are ever so deep. Many early winemakers were of Italian origin and brought with them their native Barbera, Bonarda and Sangiovese. However, it is Malbec, originally from Bordeaux and the south west of France, that has established the most successful presence in Mendoza.

Producer
Located in the high altitude Tupungato Valley region of Mendoza, this modern winery benefits from a long, cool growing season and strong UV sunlight that helps maximise the aromas and complexity of the resulting grapes. Tupungato sits at the western extreme of Mendoza right at the foot of the Andes mountains with an elevation of 1,200 meters giving benefit to the vineyards from a much cooler climate, abundant sun, and sharp contrast between day and night temperatures. When all the above is combined it allows the winemaker the opportunity to produce wines with utmost expression. Wine consultant Michel Rolland (from Bordeaux) has added his expertise to this project and in the last few years since launch the range of wines have received numerous awards and accolades.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/AltosurMalbec_cb16b5cb-427a-453c-bfc5-ddc7ecc30dec.png?v=1603707095
bollinger-special-cuvee-nv-champagne-bottle-75cl-gift-case-sale
Bollinger Special Cuvée NV Champagne - Flash Sale

£44.95 per bottle

ABV 12%

From the vineyards of this still run family Champagne house of Bollinger at Aij and vineyards at Cuis, this full-bodied NV Champagne unleashes a broad range of nuanced flavours on the palate.The richness and complexity which characterize this mellow, fine Champagne are due to the methods employed by Bollinger; for the particular component blend of vintages, only the juice of first pressings is used. The grape is predominantly Pinot Noir (60%), which together with the fermentation in oak and stainless steel results in the depth and extent of this Bollinger Champagne, while the relatively low sugar content (8-9 g/l or grammes per litre) guarantees it freshness.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/bollinger_nv_3563cdc2-31b0-415e-b881-aff1ba152cef.png?v=1611167892
laurent-perrier-cuvee-rose-brut-nv-champagne-gift-case-black-friday-deal-6
Laurent-Perrier Cuvée Rosé Brut NV Champagne, Gift Case - Flash Sale

£64.95 per bottle

ABV 12%

Founded in 1812, the Laurent-Perrier Champagne house was inherited and revived by Bernard de Nonancourt who had fought with French resistance in World War 2 as a leader of a maquis cell. It was all over and done with before September kicked off, and like its sibling, this is a beautifully relaxed and enticing wine. I am told that there is considerable interest in the Tibouren variety at Domaine de l’Ile, and we can expect to see this grape play a more active role in the blend as Syrah wains. The final blend in this vintage is a racy 27% Grenache, 26% Cinsault, 22% Syrah, 20% Mourvèdre and 5% Tibouren, and the shale and clay soils allow every aromatic element in this quartet of grapes to shine. All of the vines are farmed organically, as you might expect. With little handling involved, aside from excellent vineyard husbandry and sensitive winemaking a given, Pierre explained that the critical decision each year is on what date they pick each parcel of vines. It is safe to say that in 2022 Pierre and his team nailed these decisions! Again a beautiful background of shy saltiness allows the rose petal, rhubarb stalk and melon nuances to shine, and, in common with the white wine, the herbal and forest tones bring even more drama to proceedings. This is my favourite Domaine de L’Ile release to date, and this is solely down to the heavenly texture and seriously impressive length of finish. Apparently, the ‘mistral dew’ played a big part in the success of these 2022s. This is the first time I have heard this expression used, and I urge you to deploy it at every gathering where you serve these fantastic wines (I will be doing so). You will leave your guests stunned and hopefully a little bewildered with your advanced wine terminology and unquestionable Porquerolles expertise.
18.5/20 (drink now – 2024)
Matthew Jukes, 21st March 2023

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/Domainedel_IlePorquerollesCotesdeProvenceRose2020_d8fa91bc-881d-47cb-9029-1e512500965c.png?v=1711291954
dom-perignon-2013-champagne-gift-case-flash-sale
Dom Perignon 2013/2017 Champagne, Gift Case - Flash Sale

£229.99 per bottle

ABV 12.5%

Tasting Notes
"A driven and serious DP with aromas of chalk, biscuits, apricot stones and lemons. Beaujolais Nouveau day is an actual annual event with its very own date. The third Thursday of November has always been the day this wine goes on sale, and a couple of brave stalwarts continue raising a glass. It might be clinging on by its fingernails, but it has more integrity than the multiple grape variety ‘days’ that have faked their way into existence. The annual Penfolds Collection launch yoyos around the calendar, and even Bordeaux’s En Primeur circus tries, but usually fails, to hit the same week each year. Still, one day that has become a fixture in my diary is the new release of Whispering Angel – without fail my sample arrives on the 9th January each year!

As you will be well aware, this Pink Titan sells like hotcakes, and in vintages gone by, it has been released on strict allocation such is the demand. This is the first vintage of Whippy that actually seems actively youthful and taut. The first traces of the chateau’s site date back to Gaullist times during which its location served as a lookout point to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The chateau’s cellar structure or foundation (known today as the oldest in the region) housed an original Chateau that was given by the Comte de Provence to Gérard De Villeneuve, in 1201. The current chateau, inspired by Tuscan Villa design, was built during the mid 19th century.

Château d’Esclans lies in the center of the Department of the Var, where the majority of Provence AOC rosé is produced. The land was occupied as long as 2500 years ago when it was probably used as a lookout point for intruders sailing into the Gulf of Frejus. The original château—of which now only the cellar remains—dates back to before the 12th century. In 1201, Gérard De Villeneuve, part of a wealthy family from Marseille, took ownership of the château and the majority of the surface area of the Vallée d’Esclans that would eventually be sold off in lots. Two brothers, Sauver Louis Ranque and Francois Alexandre Ranque, were the next to own the château, known then as Terre d’Esclans.

In 1875, they sold the property to Joseph Toussaint Caussemille, who manufactured wooden matches near Marseilles. In 1955, the Perraud family owned the property until 1994. At that time, it was purchased by a Swedish pension fund that produced a small amount of wine and the remaining grapes were sold to neighboring winemakers. Sacha Lichine aquired Château d’Esclans in 2006. Today there are 108 acres (44 ha) of vineyards. The total proprety has 659 acres (267 ha).

The primary grape grown on the property is Grenache followed by Vermentino. Other grapes include Cinsault, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Tibouren. The château is known for its old Grenache vines which produce grapes that offer greater concentration of flavor than do the younger vines. As the elevation to where the lots are situated increases, so do the age of the vines. At the highest elevated lot vines are as old as 90 years.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/files/WhisperingAngelRose2021-24BottleCaseDeal_81e10128-9ecc-40d9-ac7e-219f75110489.png?v=1683285218
rock-angel-rose-2022-new
Rock Angel Rosé 2024/2025, Chateau d'Esclans

£24.95 per bottle

Rock Angel is a more sophisticated version of Whispering Angel. The `Montagne de Reims` is predominately planted with Pinot Noir, the backbone to the Champagne blend, whilst Chardonnay is ideally suited to the chalky slopes of the `Cote des Blancs` south of the town of Epernay. Pinot Meunier dominates the `Vallee de la Marne`, an area susceptible to frosts, which it is more able to withstand, due to later budding. The secret of Champagne is in the blend, where wines from different grape varieties and vineyards are blended to achieve the `house style`.

Producer
Lombard & Cie was founded in 1925 and is situated in Epernay the capital of Champagne. For three generations the Lombard family have owned vineyards in Hautvillers. With the acquisition of estate vineyards located in the Premiers Crus, the family owns 10 hectares of vineyards located in the Montagne de Reims and in the Côte des Bars. All of the vineyards of the estate are farmed sustainably with some of them in organic conversion. These are complemented by grapes sourced in the best terroirs of Champagne among the prestigious Grands Crus of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize, Cramant, and Chouilly in the Côte des Blancs, Verzenay and Ambonnay in the Montagne de Reims, and Aÿ in the Vallée de la Marne. The style of the Champagne Lombard is unique, characterized with sharpness and minerality coming from the Chardonnay of the Côte des Blancs and subtle fruitiness and rich complexity from the Pinot Noir of the Montagne de Reims. All combine with harmony and balance thanks to a low dosage and single vineyard fermentation.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/files/malherebe_aa10669a-fa7b-4a32-9815-9d224c080796.png?v=1700661607
copy-of-dom-perignon-2013-champagne
Dom Perignon 2013 Champagne

£224.95 per bottle

ABV 12.5%

Tasting Notes
"A driven and serious DP with aromas of chalk, biscuits, apricot stones and lemons.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/files/whisperingangel1bottle_3f1c0a5a-d456-413e-9611-638e5d245982.jpg?v=1705482743
puligny-montrachet-1er-cru-la-garenne-2021-gerard-thomas-1
Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2022, Gérard Thomas

£99.95 per bottle

ABV 12.5%

This superb 2021 vintage showcases the purity and freshness of its terroir, with balanced flavours, perfect acidity, and a fresh mineral backbone. Gerard has been expanding the domaine in Cotes de Beaune since the 1980s through acquisitions in Chassagne and Puligny-Montrachet. Harvesting is by hand with careful handling of complete bunches to avoid oxidation and several passes through the vineyard during harvest to ensure optimum ripeness. All the whites are barrel fermented with 25% new oak used. Ten months in cask follows, with regular lees stirring to add depth. Of course, production has increased significantly to slake the world’s elite rosé palate, but there seems to be no end in sight for the desire that committed rosé drinkers have for this pioneering wine.
I have faith that the quality of the wine will not dip, lag or wallow and in past vintages, even with an ever-increasing order book, the flair and deliciousness have actually increased!

So with the world waiting with ice bucket and glass in hand, how good is the first taste of 2022 Whispering Angel?

I am relieved to report that the unbroken run of excellence is still intact, but there is more. This is the first vintage of Whippy that actually seems actively youthful and taut. While it normally hits the ground running, with pliable fruit and welcoming freshness, this crisp, expressive wine is firm, tense, energetic and utterly ravishing. The rose petal nose, melon flesh silkiness and grapefruit acidity are all in place, and they are layered, glisteningly attractive and immediately impressive, but this 2022 vintage is different from previous vintages because it nips in on the finish promising more drama as it relaxes and billows over the next six months.

So, take it from me, that while this is already a cracker, I know that come May, right on cue, it will have even more glamour and allure on the nose, palate and finish!

This is the very first time I have added a ‘+’ to my score below because this is the symbol I use, across all of my wine writing, to indicate that a wine will improve and evolve with age!

Sacha Lichine aquired Château d’Esclans in 2006. Today there are 108 acres (44 ha) of vineyards. The total proprety has 659 acres (267 ha).

The primary grape grown on the property is Grenache followed by Vermentino. The perfume is multi-layered with equal measures of spice and tanginess, tart stone fruit and abundant red fruits. But this is not a wine with any trace of raspberries or strawberries. There is tension here with pomegranate, cranberry, sour red cherries, pomelo and rhubarb. This is a delicious wine with obvious flesh and allure, but it is extremely carefully delivered. It makes other houses look like they produce wines for carefree teenagers, while Domaine de l’Ile is designed for experienced adults only! Interestingly, Pierre and Jean-Basile brought a bottle of the 2020 vintage to show how beautifully these wines age. While this was only the second vintage of this wine, it is precision-cut, resplendent and incredibly satiating. The colour had barely budged, and the fruit was soothing and the finish keen. This is a wine to savour as much as it is one to treasure. Founded in 1843 and a family dynasty still, it is now owned by LVMH who bought it in 1999, but it still retains its unique character. the signal qualities of Krug are due to the very particular approach and methods used in its production. The house has a broad but discerning attitude with regard to blend and proportion in the cuvées. The unusual favouring and predominance of Pinot Meunier results in the production of highly successful vintage champagne. The Krug house does not follow received adages, but takes an empirical approach without prejudice. Champagne elaboration is an inexact, organic science; every harvest is different and there needs to be on-going modification of process to respond to the changing style and preference of consumers. Oak aged for fuller flavour, the individuality of each version is exactly described through the unique number on each bottle which gives details of the grape, elaboration, maturation and use of great reserve wines.

Krug has produced a new cuvée every year for 163 years, each are not from cross but very selective blending.

NEW

£24.95 per bottle

Chanel's Exceptional New Provençal Rosé

ABV 13%

Why you should buy this wine-

Recently acquired by Chanel

Respected director - Nicolas Audebert (the man responsible for the stunning wines produced at Rauzan Ségla and Canon in Bordeaux)

Estate Manager – Pierre Etcheberry – has been brought in from Château Lafleur in Pomerol

Total production 9000 cases - premium rose

TASTING NOTES

32% Grenache, 26% Syrah, 23% Cinsault, 13% Mourvèdre & 6% Tibourin; 12.5% alc.; Harvest dates: Rolle 20th & 23rd August, Syrah 19th & 22nd August, Grenache 20th, 25th & 29th August, Tibouren 18th August, Cinsault 21st, 23rd & 26th August, Mourvèdre 26th, 30th & 31st August

"The colour is anything other than pink, with coral and pale amber tones that look serious and grown-up. Production for the 2017 is tiny, about a three-month supply, so this wine will come and go pretty quickly. That represents a fairly dramatic shift in philosophy at Dom Pérignon. In the past, a wine like the 2017 would not have been commerically viable because of its small volume. Today, Chef de Caves Vincent Chaperon prefers to bottle Dom Pérignon in every vintage, if possible, as a document of the year, even if that means some releases will be very small.
