Founded in 1843 and a family dynasty still, it is now owned by LVMH who bought it in 1999, but it still retains its unique character. the signal qualities of Krug are due to the very particular approach and methods used in its production. The house has a broad but discerning attitude with regard to blend and proportion in the cuvées. The unusual favouring and predominance of Pinot Meunier results in the production of highly successful vintage champagne. The Krug house does not follow received adages, but takes an empirical approach without prejudice. Champagne elaboration is an inexact, organic science; every harvest is different and there needs to be on-going modification of process to respond to the changing style and preference of consumers. Oak aged for fuller flavour, the individuality of each version is exactly described through the unique number on each bottle which gives details of the grape, elaboration, maturation and use of great reserve wines.

Krug has produced a new cuvée every year for 163 years, each are not from cross but very selective blending.

IN BOND

Appellation - Pauillac

Owner - Rothschild family

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot

Second wine – Le Petit Mouton Rothschild

Annual production – 320,000 bottles

Tasting notes

"Exquisite purity of black currants, raspberries and some citrus. Intense and explosive, but also remarkable vibrant, the 2015 is one of the finest Tignanellos in recent memory. The 2015 also represents a bit of a shift in winemaking philosophy that favors picking fruit a bit earlier than in the past and also blending earlier than was the case in the previous period spanning 2004-2014, when the components were aged separately and then blended just before bottling. I don't think there is another wine anywhere in the world made entirely from estate fruit that can match Tignanello for quality, consistency and value within its peer group of top-flight reds. 2022-2046

Score: 98

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, August 2019

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/tignanello_2015_b282ba5e-44dc-4437-b63b-bb320d7cb9a8.png?v=1578917466
marchese-antinori-chianti-classico-riserva-2018
Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva, Tenuta Tignanello 2019/2021

£47.95 per bottle

£130.00 per magnum

ABV 13.5%

James Suckling 93 points

The Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva shows an intense ruby red color. He married into the Villermont family so forming ownership links with their vineyards in Cuis. Jospeh Bollinger expanded the business and presided over the development of a new dryer style of chamoagne destined for the English and Amercian markets (1865-70). In World War 2 Lily Bollinger took control of the firm, subsequently acquiring in the post war years prime vineyards extending almost to the current level of holdings 178 hectares. Bollinger is therefore able to supply two thirds of its requirements for its champagne production. Most of the grapes for this Champagne (La Grande Année Brut 2007) came from Ghrand Cru vineyards, the smaller proportion from Premier Crus, only the best of the first pressings are used. The wine is fermented in small oak barrels to give greater complexity of flavour and to create optimum potential ageing, in this case a minimum of 5 years after it has been bottled. Every care is taken to acheive the highest quality, the reserve wines being kept in magnums to prevent oxidation. Since his arrival cellar master Mathieu Kauffmann has taken Bollinger champagne to even higher levels of excellence.

Type: Champagne White Vintage
Country: France
Region: Champagne
Vintage: 2012
Producer: Bollinger
Primary grape: Pinot Noir
Secondary grape: Chardonnay
Screwcap: Cork
Bottle size: 75cl
Abv: 12%

£124.95 per bottle

ABV 13.0%

This wine has been made every year since 1989, and was developed primarily for the restaurant market.

Terroir
The Pauillac is made primarily from young vines, growing on the less prestigious terroirs in the vineyard, and from wines that do not meet the selection criteria for Forts de Latour (specific to each vintage).

About 20% new barrels are used in the vinification of the Pauillac, the precise proportion varying depending on the characteristics of the vintage. This is a fine-tuned expression that shows a focused sense of detail and careful attention. The quota of Cabernet Franc has been upped by a hair and this makes a big difference, especially in terms of the wine's bouquet. Otherwise, this celebrated Tuscan blend is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese. It opens to dark fruit aromas with crushed mineral, pipe tobacco, pressed flower and toasted spice. Its appearance is midnight black and profound. The wine delivers a sense of sheer excitement and nervousness that will subside with another few years of bottle age. Nonetheless, I think a certain amount of that bright edginess or rigidness will always be part of this cool vintage Solaia. In the mouth, the wine is firm, compact and dense. The tannins are chiseled to the point of sublime integration. The wine shows a tight, silky and determined approach that reminds us of the Ornellaias made under the estate's previous ownership with the Marchese Lodovico Antinori in the mid-1990s. More than anything else, this has to do with the very unique characteristics of the 2014 growing season. The wine opens to a beautifully saturated and dark appearance. Thanks to the advanced age of the vines and their extensive root systems, fruit quality was well preserved despite the cool summer and late harvest. The wine shows sweet fruit nuances with blackberry and dark currant. Spice, leather and tobacco fill in the rear. Dark, sumptuous and voluptuous in the glass, with no hard edges, the 2015 captures all the essence of the vintage while retaining a good bit of aromatic freshness. At this stage, the new oak is still a bit prominent, but that should not be an issue as the wine ages. There is more than enough depth for the 2015 to develop positively for 20-25 years, perhaps more. Just bottled a month prior to this tasting, the 2015 is naturally a bit more reticent than it has been in the past. I tasted my sample after a double decanting and was pleased by the profound nature of the wine and the immediate openness of the aromas. There is a symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. I am particularly attracted by a distant hint of medicinal or menthol herb that I also discovered in other wines with fruit from the Tignanello estate in 2017. There's a drying mineral note of crushed chalk as well. The heat and dryness of the vintage has added to the aromatic intensity of the wine (yields were reduced by a third), but the mouthfeel is carefully crafted to maintain its softness and smoothness. Fruit comes from a 57-hectare section of the Tenuta Tignanello from a vineyard that is located 390 meters above sea level with Alberese limestone rock and soils of marine origin. The wine is fermented in conical oak tanks and is aged up to 16 months in a combination of mostly French and some Hungarian oak, both new and neutral. Some 300,000 bottles were released in April 2020 after one year of bottle age."

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (June 2020)

96/100

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/tignanello_2015_112ad3fe-a43f-4617-9591-f77a44705550.png?v=1605628313
sena-2015-aconcagua-valley-chile
Seña 2015, Aconcagua Valley, Chile - 100 Points James Suckling

£199.95 per bottle

ABV 14%

“Stunning aromas of blackcurrant, stone, blueberry and licorice. The first traces of the chateau’s site date back to Gaullist times during which its location served as a lookout point to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The chateau’s cellar structure or foundation (known today as the oldest in the region) housed an original Chateau that was given by the Comte de Provence to Gérard De Villeneuve, in 1201. The current chateau, inspired by Tuscan Villa design, was built during the mid 19th century.

Château d’Esclans lies in the center of the Department of the Var, where the majority of Provence AOC rosé is produced. The land was occupied as long as 2500 years ago when it was probably used as a lookout point for intruders sailing into the Gulf of Frejus. The original château—of which now only the cellar remains—dates back to before the 12th century. In 1201, Gérard De Villeneuve, part of a wealthy family from Marseille, took ownership of the château and the majority of the surface area of the Vallée d’Esclans that would eventually be sold off in lots. Two brothers, Sauver Louis Ranque and Francois Alexandre Ranque, were the next to own the château, known then as Terre d’Esclans.

In 1875, they sold the property to Joseph Toussaint Caussemille, who manufactured wooden matches near Marseilles. In 1955, the Perraud family owned the property until 1994. At that time, it was purchased by a Swedish pension fund that produced a small amount of wine and the remaining grapes were sold to neighboring winemakers. Sacha Lichine aquired Château d’Esclans in 2006. Today there are 108 acres (44 ha) of vineyards. The total proprety has 659 acres (267 ha).

The primary grape grown on the property is Grenache followed by Vermentino. Other grapes include Cinsault, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Tibouren. The château is known for its old Grenache vines which produce grapes that offer greater concentration of flavor than do the younger vines. Although I can't claim any extraordinary differences between the two sessions, I noticed a few minimal shifts that are essential to understanding the wine's future aging ability. The 2016 Barbaresco starts off slow at first, showing a small margin of aromatic evolution in the glass. But come back two hours later, and you can almost hear the soft sounds of the symphony playing just below the surface. The 2016 vintage is characterized by the solid intensity and firmness of its aromas, which transcend fruit and veer toward balsamic herb, licorice, tar and smoke instead. The tannins offer a moment of sweetness and softness, before you are aware of their undeniable firmness. In all, there is a certain glossiness or satiny quality to the mouthfeel that underlines the wine's carefully crafted integration. I would describe this as a classic and also a somewhat austere Barbaresco that fully deserves extra cellar time to stretch those tight muscles and grow in volume. Malolactic was in stainless steel, and the wine was put through a long aging, 10 years between oak and bottle, using new and used French and American oak barrels and 20,000-liter oak vats. For Vega Sicilia, 2011 was a fresher year than 2010, not the common idea about those vintages in Ribera del Duero. The wine has a developed nose with some notes of ripe black fruit, meat and underbrush, somewhat herbal and perfumed. There is something about the nose of the Únicos that I cannot quite describe but is quite distinct, and it's in this vintage and also in the Reserva Especial. 88,288 bottles, 3,505 magnums, 318 double magnums, 60 Imperial and 3 Salmanazar were produced. There are two different experiences possible. The first entails a discovery of Bollinger R.D. during the same year of its disgorgement. In this case, the wine expresses a specific aromatic range, with complex fruity notes. The alternative experience involves leaving Bollinger R.D. for several more years to mature in the cellar, which then reveals the depth of aromas characteristic of the finest vintages.

History
In the mid-1960s, while most Champagne Houses were developing unusually shaped bottles, Bollinger decided to concentrate on its signature taste. Although old vintages were not fashionable in 1967, Madame Bollinger was bold as ever. True to her pioneering spirit, she had the daring idea of marketing the 1952 vintage that had recently been disgorged and dosed as an Extra Brut. This was the vision she championed: the absolute prestige of Bollinger lay in the wine itself, not in its vessel. In doing so, Madame Bollinger created a completely original tasting experience: the aromatic intensity of the finest vintages, contrasted with a wonderful freshness on the palate. This freshness is due to the natural acidity of the grapes during harvest, and is underscored by the Extra Brut dosage. It was a revolution that would have a lasting impact on the Bollinger style, as well as the world of champagne as a whole. This vintage bore the name of the cuvée for the very first time. It would be known as Bollinger R.D. and its label was the first ever to specify a disgorgement date. Bollinger R.D. 2007 now once again sports all the codes of this legendary label: material, font and date of disgorging. Authenticity through the years.

Tasting note
‘2007 is in most hands a weak and diluted vintage that I normally avoid. The exception is spelled Bollinger! The powerful house style often shines brighter during lighter vintages, the vintage wines from Bollinger are top on my list from 2007. The wine was already like La Grande Année classically built and balanced with good depth and tightly beautiful malic acids. Now in the R.D. version, the minerality is even clearer with macadam, chalk and gunpowder smoke. The champagne is extremely slim with a slightly buttery vanilla-like note as the top layer on above the dry notes of cocoa, hazelnut cream, dried apricots, blood orange and red juicy apples. The winter has been mild, with low level of rainfall during the months of January and February. Starting from the end of February 2016 the temperatures finally dropped and stayed low until the end of March. This late winter led to a delay of about 10 days in the bud breaking. The spring has been rainy and mild. During the summer, the temperature growing trend has been steady without any particular heat picks. There has only been a couple of hot weeks in July, with temperatures hovering above the 30° C but never exceeding the 35°C. In particular, the climate trend has been determined by remarkable temperature variations between days and nights during the last part of the growing season. It fermented with indigenous yeasts, and 10% of the volume aged in concrete, completely unoaked. The change in the oak regimen helped with the style of the vintage, which was marked by the frost that hit part of the Alión vineyards. Furthermore, the end of the season was warm and dry, and they had to work to control ripeness and power and perhaps the possibility of more aggressive tannins. It's a classical Alión, with some developed aromas, juicy and round but not heavy, with just a tad of earthy rusticity. With time, it develops more balsamic notes and hints of licorice. 230,032 bottles, 7,04 magnums, 614 double magnums and a handful of bigger sizes were produced.
