From the results of these trials would appear what we could say was the precursor of the so-called “new era” of Rioja wines. This wine is produced on a very limited scale and only in the best vintage years, in which the character of the vineyard, the soil and the variety are expressed as part of a single, harmonious whole. Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration period does not exceed 12 days. The malolactic fermentation takes place in small wooden vats with a capacity of 20,000 litres and the wine is then aged for 20 months in Bordeauxstyle barrels made of French oak. Finally, the wine spends a minimum time of a year rounding off in the bottle before being released for sale.

Tasting notes
A dark cherry colour, lively with few signs of evolution. High aromatic intensity in which the toasted and spicy aromas from the French oak predominate, together with ripe, dark-berried fruit. Intense and explosive, but also remarkable vibrant, the 2015 is one of the finest Tignanellos in recent memory. The 2015 also represents a bit of a shift in winemaking philosophy that favors picking fruit a bit earlier than in the past and also blending earlier than was the case in the previous period spanning 2004-2014, when the components were aged separately and then blended just before bottling. Lastly, at 85% Sangiovese and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2015 has a bit more Sangiovese than is the norm, which contributes to the wine's freshness and energy.

Score: 98

Antonio Galloni, vinous.com, February 2019

Fantastic aromas of dark berries, sandalwood and Spanish cedar that are ever so deep. This a very decadent expression of Opus One with a provocatively effortless harmoniousness that is truly difficult to resist."
Score: 97+ Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate (238), August 2018

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/opus_one_dc83fc0c-6832-4102-83c9-4f09da799062.png?v=1596731098
chateau-batailley-2012-pauillac
Château Batailley 2012, Pauillac

£89.95 per bottle

ABV 13.5%

"From the famous château estate of the Castéja family, the 2012 Batailley is a very strong effort. This is a big-time sleeper of the vintage. A dense purple wine with loads of crème de cassis, blueberry notes, background forest floor and cedar, this is a strong effort from Batailley and may well usher in a new era for this fifth-growth chateau that is capable of producing great wine. I tasted my sample after a double decanting and was pleased by the profound nature of the wine and the immediate openness of the aromas. There is a symphony of dark fruit with black cherry, plum, spice and sweet tobacco. I am particularly attracted by a distant hint of medicinal or menthol herb that I also discovered in other wines with fruit from the Tignanello estate in 2017. There's a drying mineral note of crushed chalk as well. The heat and dryness of the vintage has added to the aromatic intensity of the wine (yields were reduced by a third), but the mouthfeel is carefully crafted to maintain its softness and smoothness. Fruit comes from a 57-hectare section of the Tenuta Tignanello from a vineyard that is located 390 meters above sea level with Alberese limestone rock and soils of marine origin. The wine is fermented in conical oak tanks and is aged up to 16 months in a combination of mostly French and some Hungarian oak, both new and neutral. Some 300,000 bottles were released in April 2020 after one year of bottle age."

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (June 2020)

96/100

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/tignanello_2015_112ad3fe-a43f-4617-9591-f77a44705550.png?v=1605628313
chateau-nenin-pomerol-2010
Château Nénin 2010, Pomerol

Château Nénin 2009 - Buy Now

ABV 14.5%

Grape variety: 82% Merlot and 18% Cabernet Sauvignon

An excellent Pomerol from the legendary 2010 vintage. It comes from one of the few biodynamic vineyards in Bordeaux, but you are likely to see many more, given the success that Tesseron seems to be having at all levels, both in his vineyards and in his fermentation/winemaking. An astounding, compelling wine with the classic Pauillac nose more often associated with its cross-street neighbor, Mouton-Rothschild, creme de cassis, there are also some violets and other assorted floral notes. The wine has off-the-charts massiveness and intensity but never comes across as heavy, overbearing or astringent. The freshness, laser-like precision, and full-bodied, massive richness and extract are simply remarkable to behold and experience. It is very easy, to become jaded tasting such great wines from a great vintage, but it is really a privilege to taste something as amazing as this. Unfortunately, it needs a good decade of cellaring, and that's assuming it doesn't close down over the next few years. This is a 50- to 75-year wine from one of the half-dozen or so most compulsive and obsessive proprietors in all of Bordeaux. Is there anything that proprietor Alfred Tesseron is not doing right? Talk about an estate that is on top of its game! Pontet-Canet's 2010 is a more structured, tannic and restrained version of their most recent perfect wine, the 2009. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notes of incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries. A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight and richness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemaking that is capable of lasting 50 or more years. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifully integrated as are the acidity, wood and alcohol (which must be in excess of 14%). This vineyard, which is situated on the high plateau of Pauillac adjacent to Mouton Rothschild, appears to have done everything perfectly in 2009. This cuvee should shut down in the cellar and re-open in a decade or more. I was crossing my fingers that it would not disappoint in bottle and I am glad to say that it delivers the goods. It has a very intense bouquet (just as it showed out of barrel) with laser-like precision offering wild strawberry, raspberry preserve, wet limestone and hints of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, clean and fresh with pure black and red fruit whose every atom appears infused with minerals. For the first few vintages of this wine’s release, it had to put up with being Garrus’s less interesting and slightly lighter sibling. But while Garrus received all of the accolades and some perfect scores (from me!), Les Clans never complained. More recently, I have documented in detail Les Clans own character slowing forming and, in the last few vintages, blossoming into a vital individual in this tremendous estate’s portfolio. Last year’s 2019 was a triumphant wine, sultry, sexy, detailed, sophisticated, alluring, forward-drinking and yet blessed with every bit as much glamour and couture as its more structured and more age-worthy, headline-grabbing stablemate, Garrus. In 2020, Les Clans went one step further. It has now introduced even more depth of flavour and length on the finish. You will no doubt be familiar with just how incredible Whispering Angel and Rock Angel are in 2020. Les Clans takes Rock Angel’s impact and bravado and then elevates this impressive delivery of flavour to an otherworldly level of excitement. This wine is near perfect in its perfume and also its palate complexity but it is the approachability, given its breeding, which makes this the most astounding Les Clans to date."
19/20 (Drink now to 2024)

Previous vintage
"It is always such a joy to taste the new Esclans releases 2019 Les Clans is a masterclass in balance and poise. Château d’Esclans wrote the rulebook on crafting statuesque rosé wines and while all others have floundered around for a decade or more, over-oaking, over-macerating, over-blending and generally making all of the mistakes imaginable, this imperious property nailed the recipe first time around and has been fine-tuning ever since. The investment in winemaking equipment here would make both an accountant and a bank manager faint, but the vision and determination of owner Sacha Lichine have paid handsome dividends and more now that Whispering Angel is not a lone figure on the international circuit but a veritable heavenly chorus. It is clear to me, having tasted legions of 2019 rosés that this is a brilliant vintage and therefore great wines must be expected to step up. Les Clans is always built with exacting precision and so it is hard to imagine where improvements can be made! That said, I am of the mind that this is the finest release of this celestial wine to date and the superb silkiness is but one of its extraordinary attributes. Les Clans is sometimes guilty of being a little shy on the nose, but this 2019 is positively forward as it rushes from the glass to greet you. In terms of the balance, this is a full-framed wine but it seems effortlessly graceful, too. We have come to expect greatness from this label and this is what 2019 Les Clans dutifully rewards you with. While other estates strive to make wines with this level of gravitas most fall well short of the mark. Château d’Esclans will one day have true rivals, but for now, if you have the choice and also the budget to spend, then this is the wine that you will want in your glass."
Matthewjukes.com 07/10/2020

“Full body plus loads of flavor and richness. The annual Hospices de Beaune auction, created in 1859, has always been held on the third Sunday in November. The Cuvée was enlarged in 1963 thanks to a legacy made by Madame Maurice Pallegoix in memory of her husband, who was mayor of Demigny. The oldest vines in the Cuvée are Les Cent Vignes, representing 54% of the surface, and Les Teurons (19%), which were respectively planted between 1953 and 1975, and 1950 and 1955.

Hospices de Beaune history
Founded in 1443, the Hospices de Beaune was originally for a home and sanctuary for the poor. Throughout the centuries, its vocation remains the same: the quality of care is still as high, in numerous satellite establishments, and the famous auction that is held once a year takes place above all for charity purposes.Today, numerous donated parcels of vines make up a superb domain which includes 60 hectares of vines situated mostly in Grand Crus and Premiers Crus. The annual Hospices de Beaune auction, created in 1859, has always been held on the third Sunday in November. This charitable event, that is amongst the most broadcast in the world, is an important trend indicator for the Burgundy wine market. The catalogue lots at the auction are named 'cuvée' and are indicated with the name of the wine or village and one of the names of the institution's benefactors. Apart from the two charity barrels, all the profits from the auction are used to finance projects carried out by the institution. The wine commercialised during the sale is wine produced in the year.
