The unusual favouring and predominance of Pinot Meunier results in the production of highly successful vintage champagne. Jospeh Bollinger expanded the business and presided over the development of a new dryer style of chamoagne destined for the English and Amercian markets (1865-70). In World War 2 Lily Bollinger took control of the firm, subsequently acquiring in the post war years prime vineyards extending almost to the current level of holdings 178 hectares. Bollinger is therefore able to supply two thirds of its requirements for its champagne production. Most of the grapes for this Champagne (La Grande Année Brut 2007) came from Ghrand Cru vineyards, the smaller proportion from Premier Crus, only the best of the first pressings are used. The wine is fermented in small oak barrels to give greater complexity of flavour and to create optimum potential ageing, in this case a minimum of 5 years after it has been bottled. Every care is taken to acheive the highest quality, the reserve wines being kept in magnums to prevent oxidation. It holds back for the first few minutes, reticent to reveal what slowly uncoils to give wave after wave of exotic spices—cardamom, cassis, star anise and fenugreek—over an opulent core of red roses, Black Forest cake, warm cassis and black raspberries with nuances of cigar box, crushed rocks, truffles, tilled black soil, iron ore and smoked meats. The full-bodied palate is truly profound, with restrained black fruit and spice layers slowly offering mineral sparks and savory suggestions within a rock-solid frame of firm, super fine-grained tannins and beautiful freshness, finishing with epic length and depth. Second tasting of a cooler sample (the temporary tasting room was a tent and the samples warmed up quickly when the sun was out): fragrant with small black berries, opens up to a more scented beauty, still some spice but also a hint of roses. Even though only 3% of the press wine was added back, he was also absolutely glowing about the quality of this too. And he should be—the finished blend for the 2018 Léoville Las Cases is yet another triumph for this great estate. Composed of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 9% Merlot, harvested September 15 to October 4 with yields of 35.5 hectoliters per hectare, it has 14.49% alcohol and will be aged in barriques, 90% new. Very deep purple-black in color, it is a little closed to begin, slowly emerging from the glass to reveal subtle woodsmoke, violets, tilled soil and underbrush scents over a core of warm cassis, wild blueberries and redcurrant jelly plus hints of rare beef and iron ore. Following on from a sensational nose, a super-complex initial burst of fruit hits the palate and it left me reeling, while I desperately tried to compute what was going on. There is a coolness here which balances the exuberance on the palate and it is magical. In complete contrast to Ducru, this is a Zen-like wine with very fine length and serious definition. On the face of it the blend, the alcohol and oak look very similar to that of Ducru’s but the flavour is the antithesis and I adore the fact that two great estates have made such exquisite but contrasting wines in this vintage. Already very complex, there is every sign that this will turn out to be one of the truly great vintages for Las Cases. I know that this is a relatively forward style of wine for this venerable Château but I would still bet that patience rewards those who wait. There is so much depth and harmony in this wine it would be a shame to drink it before every nook and cranny can be fully explored.

Score: 19.5+

Matthew Jukes, MatthewJukes.com, April 2019

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/chateau_leoville_las_cases_0a1dea12-422c-4a8d-9f29-a48a3b978308.png?v=1550050210
nyetimber-classic-cuvee-nv-england
Nyetimber Classic Cuvée NV England

£39.95 per bottle

ABV 12%

GRAPE VARIETY
50 to 60% Chardonnay
13 to 40% Pinot Noir
10 to 20% Pinot Meunier

The pale-golden hue and fine bubbles make our flagship Classic Cuvee Multi-Vintage the ideal occasion-ready drink – whether it’s toasting a big birthday or simply finishing a busy week. Mt Difficulty has harnessed this once brutal terrain to produce premium wines at the forefront of Otago`s and some say New Zealand`s, finest wine production.

Media
Bob Campbell awarded 95 points in February 2017.

£19.95 per bottle

£39.95 per magnum

ABV 13.0%

TASTING NOTE
Colour: Pale straw

Bouquet: A lifted and perfumed Sauvignon Blanc with strong citrus characteristics leading into ripe tropical tones. This variety withstands oak- and bottle ageing well thanks to its good balance of acidity and fine tannin. The Graciano and Mazuelo varieties, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10%, provide crispness and a lively colour.

Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration time is never more than 12 days. The mash was pressed in a pneumatic bag press where both free run and pressed juice fractions were treated oxidatively with minimal chemical additives. The juice was settled cold at 120 Celsius in a stainless- steel tank for two days and decanted into the clay amphorae for spontaneous fermentation. Once fermentation was completed, 800 Li was decanted to oak casks for further maturation. The wine in the French coopered barrels was partially allowed to go through secondary fermentation known as malo- lactic fermentation where malic (the firmer green apple tasting acid) is converted to lactic (softer milk tasting acid) and further matured for 9 months. Intense and explosive, but also remarkable vibrant, the 2015 is one of the finest Tignanellos in recent memory. The 2015 also represents a bit of a shift in winemaking philosophy that favors picking fruit a bit earlier than in the past and also blending earlier than was the case in the previous period spanning 2004-2014, when the components were aged separately and then blended just before bottling.
