This variety withstands oak- and bottle ageing well thanks to its good balance of acidity and fine tannin. The Graciano and Mazuelo varieties, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10%, provide crispness and a lively colour.

Fermentation takes place at a controlled temperature of 26ºC and the maceration time is never more than 12 days. Riscal reservas spend around two years in American Oak barrels, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years. Before release for sale it spends a minimum of one year rounding off in the bottle; time enough to show how much complexity tempranillo is able to achieve.

Tasting notes
Cherry-red colour with good robe. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is yet another stunning example. Depths of mineral-encased black cherries, sage, allspice, licorice, tobacco and crushed violets lift up from the glass. It’s seamlessly silky, even as the palate is peppered with tart red and black berries, nervous acids and savory exotic spices. This shows the density and weight of the vintage in a youthfully monolithic stance, yet with all the necessary components to maintain perfect balance. The 2016 Il Poggione seems to fold in upon itself through the finish, which is dark, mysterious and structured, with only hints of black tea and licorice to tempt the imagination. This wine shows a lot of life and dark fruit purity with black plum, blackberry, cassis and tarry prune. There is a delightful note of black pepper that is specific to this warm and sunny vintage. The fruit shows softer and richer concentration compared to past vintages and more pulpy density that gives this edition a bigger profile in terms of mouthfeel. Production is 75,000 bottles. The current release of 2018 is highly regarded, winning a Decanter Platinum medal, this rigorous blind tasting assessment is judged on the quality of the wine alone. However, it also stands as recognition along with many other accolades for Clos du Val’s pioneering spirit and long-term commitment to quality. The 2018 is a spell-binding interpretation of Cabernet Sauvignon, with generous cassis fruit balanced with rich dark chocolate, graphite and a firmness of tannin that provides the power which moves this wine into the next level. How had I missed this? Perhaps my wife had signed for it earlier in the day, and it was lost among other boxes in our hallway. There was no indication on the outside of its contents, but I am delighted that I felt moved to open it because it meant that I managed to taste 2021 Whispering Angel in the last few hours of 2021. It is oddly exciting to taste a wine when it is so young and so recently bottled, and one rarely gets the chance to taste Northern Hemisphere wines in the year of their birth. More often than not, newly bottled samples taste shocked and reticent, but these are not descriptors of this tremendous wine. I usually taste alone, but as my wife and I felt obliged to abandon plans for a party in favour of inviting a handful of neighbours around for an early evening drink, I opened this nascent Angel for a small group of us to taste. The appreciation was unanimous, and I was impressed with the many descriptors offered by our friends – after all, they are all keen wine drinkers. The overarching feeling of the group was that this was a superb effort and one which tasted delicious already but which had a seam of nervy acidity which might propel it forwards for more than just one summer, and I couldn’t agree more. There has been a gradual tightening up of Whispering Angel since the 2019 vintage and in 2021 there is a wonderful backbone to this wine from which the fruit is carefully draped. With the trademark watermelon and pomegranate hints and a deeper and more structured mid-palate than was found on the lithe 2020 this is a more sophisticated wine than its crowd-pleasing predecessor. It was tasted with winemaker Sandrine Garbay in London. After the summer drought when Sauternes received just 2.5mm of rain until 26 July, that day saw a 112mm deluge that replenished underground reserves and gave ripening the push it needed. Dry and warm conditions prevailed throughout September when there was no sign of botrytis infection. That was finally provoked by 38mm of rain between 21 and 25 of September, followed by warm clement weather. After minor picking of Sauvignon Blanc on 7 of October, the main harvest began in earnest on 10 October. Pickers worked over the following five days, including Sunday. Time was of the essence because, as forecasts predicted, the weather suddenly changed on 14 of October with 40mm or rain. After that, the picking teams skirted between showers between 17 and 22 of October, though by now the fruit had begun to deteriorate. Therefore, the key aspect of this Yquem is the extremely tight picking window. The final blend contains 138g/L residual sugar, which is slightly less than the previous vintage, with 5.5g/L total acidity and 14.4% alcohol. Tasting the 2019, I noticed that it has a slightly paler hue compared to recent vintages (though I never read too much into the colour of young Sauternes.) For certain, it has a highly-aromatic bouquet that is beguiling in purity, enticing aromas of honeysuckle and saffron, soon joined by camomile, white flowers and orange blossom. It has wonderful delineation and gains intensity with aeration. The palate is supremely well-balanced with fine bead of acidity. Very harmonious and armed with just the right amount of viscosity, this Yquem is surprisingly understated at first but gains presence, offering irresistible flavours of layers of honey, lemongrass, lemon thyme and orange pith. Yquem is so tempting in its youth, but I feel that this vintage will repay those with the nous to cellar for at least a decade."
98
Neal Martin, vinous.com, February 2022

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/yquembottle_f2d6a66f-d944-4ec9-9b29-02d98c392274.png?v=1647970124
recital-rose-2020-domaine-gavoty-cotes-de-provence
Recital Rosé 2023, Domaine Gavoty, Cotes de Provence

£14.95 per bottle

ABV 13.00%

Tasting Note
Pale pink with a floral nose showing strawberry and peach notes. In the Gavoty family for more than 200 years, the estate is currently run by the eighth generation, Roselyne, who farms the 43 hectares of vineyards organically out of a deep respect for the environment. 150 hectares of the estate are left fallow, mostly as woodland, to encourage biodiversity. Sheltered from the sea by the Maures Massif, winters here can be severe; -10°C is not uncommon, and summer nights are cool, giving the wines great balance and poise. The first traces of the chateau’s site date back to Gaullist times during which its location served as a lookout point to spot intruders coming by boat into the Gulf of Frejus. The chateau’s cellar structure or foundation (known today as the oldest in the region) housed an original Chateau that was given by the Comte de Provence to Gérard De Villeneuve, in 1201. The current chateau, inspired by Tuscan Villa design, was built during the mid 19th century.

Château d’Esclans lies in the center of the Department of the Var, where the majority of Provence AOC rosé is produced. The land was occupied as long as 2500 years ago when it was probably used as a lookout point for intruders sailing into the Gulf of Frejus. The original château—of which now only the cellar remains—dates back to before the 12th century. In 1201, Gérard De Villeneuve, part of a wealthy family from Marseille, took ownership of the château and the majority of the surface area of the Vallée d’Esclans that would eventually be sold off in lots. Two brothers, Sauver Louis Ranque and Francois Alexandre Ranque, were the next to own the château, known then as Terre d’Esclans.

In 1875, they sold the property to Joseph Toussaint Caussemille, who manufactured wooden matches near Marseilles. In 1955, the Perraud family owned the property until 1994. At that time, it was purchased by a Swedish pension fund that produced a small amount of wine and the remaining grapes were sold to neighboring winemakers. Sacha Lichine aquired Château d’Esclans in 2006. Today there are 108 acres (44 ha) of vineyards. The total proprety has 659 acres (267 ha).

The primary grape grown on the property is Grenache followed by Vermentino. Other grapes include Cinsault, Merlot, Mourvèdre, Syrah, and Tibouren. The château is known for its old Grenache vines which produce grapes that offer greater concentration of flavor than do the younger vines. As the elevation to where the lots are situated increases, so do the age of the vines. At the highest elevated lot vines are as old as 90 years.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0131/6713/2731/products/whisperingangelbottlejubilee-finewinedirect473x473copyright2022finewinedirectltd.png?v=1648661882
chateau-gazin-2010-pomerol
Château Gazin 2010, Pomerol

£169.95 per bottle

"Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Gazin charges out of the gate with bold boysenberries, baked plums and Christmas cake notes plus hints of unsmoked cigars and bouquet garni. The di Gresy family have been in the business since 1797 and possess the quiet confidence coming from generations of success. They are not given to hyperbole, however Alessandro di Gresy described it as “as close to a perfect vintage (if there is) as a producer could ask”. Many of the 2016 Barbaresco and Barolos sold out on allocations or are now quite rightly at some fantastic prices. Marchesi di Gresy’s Monferatto Rosso is not their most famous wine, but in this vintage in particular it delivers tremendous pleasure and fantastic value. Further, the great wines of 2016 are not yet ready to drink, but at di Gresy they believe in a long elevage and this wine is released to the market in a state suitable to drink. This wine is made from 100% Merlot, though it tastes far more of Piemonte than what anyone’s experience of Merlot as a variety is like. The temperate site and clay soils create that dichotomy that is Piemonte, firm but sensual, joyful and serious, savoury but with a substantial core of fruit. Its textures are unexpectedly soft and velvety-smooth, coupled with depths of intense red fruits that make an appearance just before a mix of brisk acids and tannins creates a more tactile and youthfully clenching expression toward the finale. This leaves the palate aching under the 2016’s structural heft, yet with plenty of primary concentration to balance, as wild savory herbs and earthy mineral tones linger for up to a minute. The potential here is off the charts, but readers will need to be very patient.

NEW

£29.95 per Bottle

£54.95 per Magnum

£150.00 per Jeroboam 3 Litre

£399.99 per Methuselah 6 Litre Original Wooden Case

£699.99 per Methuselah 9 Litre Original Wooden Case

Previous 2020 vintage:
"Primarily Grenache with Rolle making up the numbers
2020 Rock is a magnificent creation and this wine soars above the other in terms of structure balanced with innate elegance. The oak involvement is so well-judged and so well-integrated in this wine it is barely noticeable as a flavour but as a texture enhancer, it is second to none. Luxurious, aerial, composed and effortlessly grand, Whispering Angel’s big sister is a thrilling wine in 2020 and it is worth noting that this is not an aperitif wine but a serious accompaniment to fine food."
Matthewjukes.com 26th May 2021

Previous 2019 vintage:
"Sacha Lichine’s dramatic, herby Rock Angel is one up from wishy-washy Whispering Angel with a lot more alcohol and oomph, care of oak-barrel ageing and a good splosh of syrah and rolle."
Jane MacQuitty, The Times, 6th June 2020

Rock Angel is a more sophisticated version of Whispering Angel. At an elevation of three hundred meters, it enjoys a unique microclimate: at night, it is constantly cooler than on the shore. The vineyard’s orientation brings natural ventilation that favors the healthy development of its grapes. The amount of sunshine and rain and average temperatures are never excessive, providing ideal conditions for the vine to thrive.

On this terroir, roots reach deep down into the depths of the land, which protects the vine from extreme dryness.
